THE RULES

In the beginning...

Greetings! Thanks for your interest in Desperate Fans. It began as a roleplay on Livejournal in *mumble*2005*mumble* that was, at its core, essentially a ton of literary characters arriving at a mysterious mansion, not knowing why they were there, and then causing a lot of drama. Inside jokes were born, laughs were had, tears were shed, the rise and fall of the Roman empire charted, etc etc. Fast forward to 2023. We are starting fresh but with similar vibes. If you are looking for a chill, panfandom roleplay that has a lot of looseness to it - but may also have the opportunity for some delicious plot - then look no further.

Your character will arrive at The Mansion and not know why they are there. They may or may not retain whatever powers they have. They may or may not explore the mansion and the grounds in an attempt to discover what brought them there - or they can just chill and interact with the denizens!

This is a literature-based roleplay, so in terms of characters, only characters that got their start from literature** are allowed in this roleplay. So yes, the various characters from The Princess Bride would be allowed (it was a book first!) - but Star Wars characters are not allowed on the basis of "there are books about them". The character should also have a moderate-sized, "on screen" - or I suppose "on page" - role in their source material and only have knowledge bound to that source material. If the moderators need to split hairs about whether or not a character is allowed, we will split hairs, but there are plenty of characters to be claimed without having to! Please read through the rules below and contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns.

**Literature being books, novels, plays, etc. Poems and graphic novels are grey areas subject to moderator approval.

Member Restrictions: Preferably, all members of this community should be 21+. That’s an arbitrary number but an attempt to ensure that nobody is significantly younger. No NC-17 content in the main community but anything on personal journals is fair game.

Activity Requirement: We're all adults with busy lives and that's the point of this roleplay! If you post something to the main community, try and be somewhat free for the next few days to get some tagging done. But if you get busy, don't be afraid to take a week to respond. Gentle poking is allowed, but don't fault others for taking a week to respond. The only monthly posting "requirement" is that your character should make a monthly post either to the community or to their personal journal (whether moving plot forward, a written journal entry that others may respond to, an open post, etc).

If it has been 2+ months and a character has not posted anything or replied to any comments, they are considered inactive and you will have to reapply for them.

Discord: Our Discord channel has become a large source of plotting, communication, and entertainment. Once you join, there are a lot of resources there (thread archive, canon resources, a document with mansion lore, etc).

Roleplay Advice for Newbies: In large, friendly letters: DON’T PANIC. It’s simple! Just write. Don't try and introduce something drastic to the plot without clearing it with the other typist first. Abide by improv rules; you are trying to build on what the other person is putting down. If you need to ask the other typist anything (example: "hey, is it cool if my character does this?") you can either ask the moderators for their contact information or contact them on Discord - but if you have no other way of getting in touch, you are free to add it to the comment with some notation indicating that it's out of character.

Writing Style: *used to be all about that asterisks life* - but prose is the suggested writing style of this community, unless you are actively writing a letter, a journal entry, or something that requires a different format!

In-Game Issues: If anybody is making you feel uncomfortable, please send an email or message to the mods. Obviously, some of the characters will be terrible people/beings - but any excessive racism/sexism/abuse/targeting etc by characters and ANY of that out of character will not be tolerated. We want this to be a comfortable safe space for everyone to flex their creative muscles in.

Now that you have read through the rules, our application post is HERE if you are interested in applying for a character.

In the end, have fun and be chaotic!
